Position:Home>Visual Arts> What good is film? Why bother?

Question:Am I completely missing it here? Everyone except "curtis" is talking about movies, but I take your question as meaning film photography vs digital... right?

At any rate, this argument has gone on for years, and will KEEP going on for years.

I think both mediums have their place. One of the reasons I love shooting medium format film is to use the CAMERA. It is a simple joy to use and I feel *I* am actually creating art with it. A totally different experience from what I feel the instant I pick up the fancy DSLR. With it, I don't feel like an artist... I just feel like another "customer" playing a video game. It gets the job done, but I feel no accomplishment in it.

Plus... a high quality scan of a medium format film negative can still put digital to it's knees!

There is no good...

Personally, my favorite movies are the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
i think they are amazing

it's according to what your asking.......

Twenty years from now all those fading prints of your digitally-saved priceless moments and a couple of crashes of hard drives you forgot to back up will make you wish for the good old days.

Now you have two types of film (in my opinion), the waste of time ,pointless, getting nothing from, life-numbing , type of films.

Then you have the Inspiring, uplifting, mind-opening, life changing,
point of view altering, type of films.

Film can numb life, or give life.

Bluntly speaking, theres a whole lot of rubbish to watch, but you do get the odd diamond.

You're right.

I just saw Grindhouse Presents Death Proof and it may have killed film permanently.

because when your hard drive crashes film isn't deleted.

i think printed pictures are more personal. there is the element of surprise. you can't see the picture right after you took it and decide if you want to delete it or not. you took that picture and it is permeant on film. you have wait and see when you finally finish developing it.

we are losing the things that once everyone appreciated. darkroom is hard work, you have to be dedicated. or you can wipe of you digital camera and click one button and get a bunch of pixels that you can delete if you don't like it and take a new one.

Film gives vastly more light latitude for editing in both stills and motion picture as well as better depth of field. Also, having a hard negative is the best thing when your hard drive crashes or a surge kills your system.
