Position:Home>Visual Arts> What are some ways to make photographs of people look more interesting?

Question:I take lots of photographs of people, friends and family, both portrait style and spontaneous/fun pics. I need suggestions on any ways to make them look more interesting, prettier, or just plain fun. I'm open to any ideas and willing to try anything with them. Thanks for the help.

Just a couple ideas that work sometimes. Shoot at a wide aperture that leaves the background out of focus. Cool and dark color background; blue or green. Warm color skin tone, put a light yellow cellophane on your flash. Have the sun at their back and a little to one side. Make them stand,or sit so the sun frames their hair and just skims the side of their face. 9 out of 10 times, you need a flash to fill in the shadows. This way the don't squint, or have deep shadows. Meter for the background and set the flash the same way. This way the flash won't reach the back, only the subject. Have fun.

go to fotoflexer.com and you can make them black and white or make just parts of them black and white and you can do other cool stuff with them like add captions and litle picture and change the colour or stuff

If you are using a film camera, you can use old or expired film to make the images appear more antiqued and weathered once the film is developed. You can also change the exposure time on a film or a digital camera. The longer the exposure time, the more washed out and blurry the photo becomes, but it can create some cool effects too, especially at night time. If your camera has the feature where it takes continuous photos in rapid succession, you can take a bunch of photos of someone doing something like running or dancing, and then line them all up to make a cool collage. The weather can have cool effects on your photos,too--if it's foggy or slightly dark outside, your photos will look more moody or spooky. If it's really bright outside, the overexposure will give the viewer a sense of it being hot. You can also arrange your photos with the subjects in unexpected locations, like completely off center, or even partially out of frame. If you look up the work of fine arts photographers you might also get some interesting ideas. One of my favorites is Diane Arbus. I think the more photos you take, the more ideas you will come up with on your own--good luck!

Try making collages with photoshop. Be creative, make the pictures pop. :-)
