Position:Home>Visual Arts> Is this a good shading technique?

Question:I draw a picture(say, a person)and then on a seperate sheet of paper, I scribble an extremely dark patch of pencil lead. I rub my finger through the lead and then run my finger along the lines of the picture(only the ones that need shading). I erase any extra, unneeded shade. I know it's definitely not proffessional shading, but is it a good technique? I'm thinking of entering a competition if I can find one.

...Well, whatever floats your boat, I guess.

actually i drew a picture once that was a dragon and a monster (three-tailed fox) facing each other, as if in battle. but i needed it to be dark, to look like it was a stormy day. So i'd shade very lightly in every empty space, then i rubbed it all to make it look like everything was darkened by the clouds. so yes, that technique does work. Quite well, actually, if you know how to use it.
