it is a fancy pitcher - a container for liquids. it can be made of any material - glass or metals - and there are lots of shapes.

A big, big sort of pot thing. My Mum used to have a lot of these in her kitchen. Multiple use container everything from dried lentils to milk. Bear in mind I am the seventh child of ten (and also the seventh child of the seventh child). Lot of uses for a work of sheer genius.
