Beginner's Adobe Photoshop?

Question:I scanned one of my pictures into the computer, but the background of the image is gray and not one solid color. Being new at photoshop, I don't know how to change the background to solid white so I can color it. Does anybody have any tips of tutorials that could possibly give me the basics on coloring, or solve my problem?

Click on the icon on one of the toolbars that looks like a diagram... there are three overlapping circles, on blue, on green, and one red. Click on that, and a window will pop up to alter the coloring or light / darkness. You can lighten the image in that window.
