It really depends on the type of work you do and how long you want to preserve it for. I'd say for special work, like anything you were selling, use the proper fixative, if you do a lot of practice work just for you it could be alright to use hairspray on that. Or you could compromise and try both and compare them.

You can use hairspray and it will work just fine. I have used it on mine and it did the trick and never damaged my work.

No hairspray, please. You have to buy fixative in shop for artists.

You should use a fixative. You can buy it any art supply or craft store. Hairspray will work, but can turn your paper yellow over time, and won't hold up as long. Fixative is made specifically for protecting your work. Spend the extra few bucks. Isn't your artwork worth it?
