I think it was part luck, part who he surrounded himself with.

Warhol gained slight popularity as an artist when he started illustrating for magazines in the '50s.

Eventually, he started to produce his own works of art, which include the iconic Campbell's soup can, as well as his silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, etc.

In my opinion, I think he took off as a pop star because people were ready for something completely new in art, and he gave it to them.

Also, he was notorious for using his friends for his own gain, financial or otherwise, and that may have helped him grow more prominent.

For example, he thought Edie Sedgwick (who was beautiful and charismatic) was his ticket to Hollywood, and thusly decided to produce movies with her in them (without paying her, of course) while spending her money (she was a rich heiress) for his own purposes.

Also, in the '80s when his popularity was relatively wavering, he became friends with Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was then an up-and-coming artist and most likely probably leached at the very least some fame off of him.

People will probably come up with different interpretations. Mine is simple: because he makes himself an 'icon' in the pop culture universe.

He was just an artist who became famous for his take on bake bean tins, Marlyn Monro and abstract art, a new slant if you like, the show biz people wanted to be seen with him.
He was very quiet never really spoke much, but was nearly always with celebs

He is a movie producer.
