Writing is not about saving time .. it is about producing excellence

Many writers use photos produced by photographers, but the pay them for the usage and they give them credit.

This can become very expensive, but that is the problem for the publisher.

I have a friend who writes how to photo books. The images he uses that are not his own, he either barters or the publisher pays the fee for usage.

If you attempt to use copyrighted (all photos are by definition copyrighted) without a release, your publisher will not use it in any case, so your question becomes a non-issue.

boo-champ. and no, YOU can't do anything.

Only if you have the permission of the photographer. If not, ur asking to be sued, because it's theft.

In a word, "No".

Talk to the owners, negotiate a deal; images are a "dime a billion" today.

It is worth your time.

Writing a book is easy, getting it published is another story. A story made more difficult if you have several people claiming copyright infringement.

NO

Images on flickr or any website are NOT public domain, they cannot be taken and used. You MUST have the photographer's permission and, if applicable, a model release or property release. Taking these images without permission is a violation of copyright and is considered theft. You could be liable for damages and could be sued.
