Position:Home>Visual Arts> Good computer for photo shop?

Question:Almost anything with a good video card and a lot of memory. A fast processor does not hurt either. I would suggest any of the AMD 64 bit processors faster than 2 gigahertz, at least 1 gig of memory, 200 gig hard drive and the best video card you can afford.
One thing I would consider is getting rid of windows and going to Linux and Gimp to replace photoshop. Windows and Photoshop do not take advantage of the 64 bit processors but you can get a 64 bit Linux and 64 bit version of Gimp. I have put a few of these together for friends an set them up to dual boot both Linux and windows and they have found that Linux and Gimp are faster than Windows and Photoshop on the same system. Also Linux and Gimp are both free to download. 64 bit Linux will give you almost twice the response time that 32 bit window and 32 bit Photoshop will on the same system.
Oh, a lot of the Hollywood professional shops are going to Linux or Unix. I understand that Unix is what ILM is using for their CGI movie stuff now.

What version of Photoshop?

Regardless, any modern PC should be able to run them just fine.

Something dual core and as much RAM as you can afford.

I have used Photoshop on both an Apple and a Dell. Just make sure you have enough memory.

i have had photo shop on a pc and mac and i like it a lot more on my mac. photo shop i basically the same on both but i like using it on my mac better because i find it easer to save it where you want and you can find images easer on a mac. so basically the set up of a mac works better. i think

Well, this could easily turn into a PC vs. Apple war! I will say that if the ONLY thing you are using the computer for is Photoshop, it probably does not matter as long as you have plenty of memory... at least 2 gigs.

Now when it comes to using a computer for other things, I would throw the best PC you could give me out in the trash before I would exchange it for my Apple. Night and day difference in ease of use, logical operating system, crash free, virus free, ease of downloads, built in programs, and on and on.
