Yes, there is a reason some people have more red eye than others!
Redeye is caused by the flash being reflected off the red blood cells in the retina (the lining of the back of your eye) especially when the eye is wide open in the poor light where you often would use flash.
Some people's eyes react better to low light levels, and their irises open wider, so allow more of the redness to show. Also, if a person happens to have been looking at a bright light just before the flash fires, the pupils of the eyes will be contracted and allow less light to reach and reflect off the retina... so the red eye effect is reduced. Most "anti-redeye" functions throw a bright light on the person, and cause the pupils of the eye to contract, lessening the redeyed effect.

Even basic software nowadays can cancel red eye, or prints can be easily retouched. I tend to turn off the Anti redeye function, because it alerts people to the fact you are taking pictures, and can make people squint up!

This is very common when taking photos with a flash. Some cameras have built-in red-eye removal software. If your camera doesn't have this facility the pictures can be altered by using red-eye removal when you display the pics on your computer. If you have Picasa or Photoshop or any other picture-editing software it will be in there.

'Red Eye' in a photograph is caused by the camera's flash reflecting off the retina of the eyeball. The darker the room, the larger the pupal in the eye opens and the more likely you'll get red eye shots.

Some suggestions to stop it:
1. use the 'red eye' setting on the camera.
2. move the flash to the side so the reflection is not straight back.
3. Turn up the lights in the room (brighter room, smaller pupal).
4. Turn flash off.

If you are printing your pictures and notice the red eye, photography stores have special pens that you can buy to cover over the offending spot on the photo.

If you are manipulating digital photos. Many photoshop-style programs can remove red eye from the picture file.

Hope this helped.

The other answers are correct when it comes to the cause. Another way to avoid this is to tell the model to look at your shoulder or something to either side of you. If they are not looking directly at the camera this is much less likely to happen. This is why pros use a bracket that moves the flash away from the front of the camera.
Red eye is easily corrected with any photo editting software so don't worry to much about it.

This is because when people are looking at the camera they actually stare straight into the flash but there should be a setting on the camera where the flash will flash a number of times before taking the picture and this reduces the red eyes in photo's
