Position:Home>Visual Arts> Can I major in Graphic Design in college without a drawing (pencil & paper) back

Question:I am a high school student that is interested in going to a school and majoring in graphic design or digital media. The problem is that the first 2 years of high school i started out majoring in business which i later on realized is not what i really wanted to do. My counslor informed me that it was too late to change my major so i wanted to know if i could go off to a college and still do well in majoring in graphic design without having prior skills that have to do with pencil and paper sketches. I wanted to work with the design on the computer and add the graphics to the characters in animated movies, and i really want to know can i pursue a career in that field without drawing skills, Thank You

I don't really understand what high school has to do with college ... but yes, you can. Unfortunately, I think there's too much emphasis put on high school ... once you're out, High School really doesn't count for much. I guess it really depends on what school you want to go to, but for the most part, what you did in high school won't affect your adult life (I'm talking about academics, here ... smoking crack and getting pregnant definitely WILL affect your adult life). Don't get me wrong; it's important, but it's not the end all, say all. We didn't have "majoring" in my high school, and I'm a graphic designer now.

Also, graphic design is different from pencil / paper drawing. You don't even have to be a good "drawer" to be a graphic designer. I know FANTASTIC graphic designers who can't draw worth a lick. They're both very different fields.

That's what college is for ... they will teach you. You'll start out with basic courses and work your way up. Plus, (hopefully) you'll find that the professors will become mentors to you! It's a totally different learning experience from high school. You will do fine ... good luck in college!
