Position:Home>Visual Arts> Statue outside the Pantheon in Rome? What are those evil-duck looking things?

Question:I just came back from a trip to Italy and I'm looking at my pictures. There's one of myself in front of a fountain/statue outside the Pantheon in Rome. The fountain has these beaked fish that look really evil. I'm sorry I can't describe them better, but I don't know a whole lot about Roman mythology! I'm curious to know what they are, since I'm sure they have another name besides "evil duck looking thing"! I found a picture on google, but it doesn't give a name. Here is a link:

Anyone know what its called? Thanks

I f you enlarge the pic. below the one that you gave us which is of the whole fountain - the Fontana del Pantheon (1575) , you will see that the beaked fish faces are actually the heads of snakes curling either side of a giant mask-face. http://www.bigseal.com/imagebank/I-Statu... Details about the fountain are described at http://www.garden-fountains.com/fountain...

they seem to be toothed dolphins on either side of the triton thing
