No, they're just used to clip pens to notebooks, etc. They're not supposed to prevent drying out.

they protect your pockets

they prevent you from writing all over crap when you put the pen in a purse or a bag

keep a pen from drying out! Good luck with that! :)

they have it so your hands have more things to do in life

They prevent people from having bad luck and getting hit by trains.

they prevent the pen from marking things randomly

IDK PENS JUST COME WITH CAPS IF U HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT, THEN DEAL WITH IT.....

it makes sure you don't have like pen marks on your clothes or other papers ....i like to blow at them and they SOMETIMES make wistles sounds lol ^_^

they prevent you from scribbling all over yourself (my hands used to be covered in pen marks all throughout high school lol). and also they allow u to hook ur pens to ur pocket on ur button down shirts that you wear to work so that you look important and smart and busy lololol

but i think if you leave a pen without a cap on for a long time it will dry out, kind of like a thin marker. not really sure about the whole 'hole in the pen cap' thing, but also if you look at retractable pens (the pens which have the thing at the top which you press to make the pen come out), they don't have caps and they are exposed to air, but not as much as regular pens. I think basically if you don't have a cap on a pen it doesn't flow as well at first, like it takes a long time for the ink to actually come out

Keeps pens from drying out, protect ur pockets and clean ur ears j/k (don't do that, it looks disgusting when someone sees u doing this)
