I agree with above answer. I have a degree in Art History; but for the most part what is important to most employers is the fact that I HAVE a degree. It really doesn't matter what it is.

But if you want to follow your passion for art and get a degree - go for it! Chances are this means you have some creativity in you, which will help you apply your degree in different ways and find a job where you will succeed. I also majored (or you can minor) in Arts Management. Basically, it's a Management degree so I had to take all the 101 courses like accounting, management, ethics, etc. Those are going to be great classes that provide a strong base for any job.

I found a job right after graduation as the Manager of an art gallery. It's a great way to apply my passion for art and I can delve into my knowledge of art history in a variety of ways, anything from describing a piece of art to a customer to advertising campaigns.

That's a pretty rarified field. There would be very few job titles such as "Art Historian."

However, the knowledge that the degree represents could find an outlet in positions such as museum curators or directors. Or, in research positions as Art Directors for companies such as the Learning or History television channels, or on the staff of a non-fiction book publisher. The larger ad agencies may also be able to use someone with your degree on their full time staff, especially if your knowledge extends to more modern techniques.

Still, it will take some very creative job searches to find an exact match to your degree. Did you have a minor that might apply to a position where the combination of that and your major is suited?

http://www.nd.edu/~crosenbe/jobs.html features alternatives for art historians...hope it helps! Seems like there's alot on the site that requires or applies the education of an art historian.
