If you can locate the owner's manual, I would suggest you start there. This camera was one of the first auto exposure film cameras to offer aperture preferred AE, a very good camera in my opinion.

I don't have too much experience personally, but this website is a pretty good resource:

Here you go:

There's a brief history and review of the camera then the manual contents starts mid-page.

It looks solid. Enjoy your camera :-)

load the film, set the iso dial, put it on auto or drive it manual once you learn more on photography. - note its a manual focus SLR so so have to focus yourself, exposure is good on auto - use manual and a grey card for best results and to control your depth and speed.

You have an excellent camera. I own 3 X-700 cameras and use them all the time. You really need the Owner's Manual and I have an extra one. If you'll send me your email address I'll tell you what I need and if you agree its yours.

I have one in a bag not 10 feet from me in my closet. I got it in 1982. Terrific camera, never gave any trouble. I used it well into the 90s until I started getting into medium format.
That little 35mm taught me more about photography than anything else in my life. As said above, it is manual focus and you can set the aperture ring to the green spot for full auto exposure control, or you can select the aperture you want for auto shutter speed selection. Mine has the motor drive on the bottom of it, and I also have the Minolta flash for it... I think it is the 280PX... been a long time since I looked in the bag. I have a 50mm lens and a 70 - 200 zoom lens, both Minolta... or is it 70 - 300?

Anyway, a great, tough, camera that will serve you well. I have a friend who to this day still uses her x700 to shoot weddings with.

Since you have links to the manual, I will not post that, but do download the manual. The old manuals such as came with that camera are actually little photograhy lessons. They do not just tell you what pushing a button does, it also tells you WHY you should push it and has photo examples of how the various aperture and shutter speed settings affect your photos. You will not only learn the camera, but get some good basic photography knowledge.
