A half page is actually hard to write because there is so much information. If I were you I'd write a brief life story and focus on a specific time: For example I wrote a paper called "the yellow house years" which was the time when he lived with Gaugan. You can notice how his art has changed. Also be sure and go through the different art styles he went through. Here's a great site for researching him: artcyclopedia.com

I'd recommend including what his childhood was like, any close family members (and why they were close), and perhaps some information on his probable mental illness.

Include his passionate nature. He began his career as a minister, and was so zealous he frightened his parish. The "Potato Eaters" is an example of his artwork at that time.
Also include his relationship with his brother, his work in Arles, the period of time he lived with Gaughan, and his illness which forced him to live in an asylum. Van Gogh painted feverishly when he was well, and as the illness encroached more and more upon his life, he despaired to the point of suicide, no longer believing that painting could stave off the attacks of mental illness.
If you line up Van Gogh's self portraits you can trace the events in his life and his mental states by analyzing them.
