Position:Home>Visual Arts> Would this be a good flash for my XTi?

Question:http://www.wolfcamera.com/product/541161...

I do a lot of photo journalism that includes concerts with lowlight and such.

If this would be a good investment for a learning amatuer photographer, let me know or suggest something else.

It's a good flash but I'd go for the top of the range and possibly consider a Metz, depending on what other subjects innterest you - the key factors in flash performance are power, accuracy and control, and in the Metz' case, size.

If you are looking at specialising in concert photography I'd definitely be looking at a sports zoom (a lens with a very wide aperture) re your earlier / lens question, and I'd expect the 17-55 (27-88mm equivalent on 35mm) would be a far better lens for this purpose...

One of my specialities is concert photography and your other lens will be of very limited use if you can get close to the stage - and that's where the best photographers want to be...
NB you don't necessarily need a flash for concert work - the chances are it will kill the lighting unless you can use it with great subtlety - just use the available light!!

You can't go wrong with that flash .. it is a dedicate flash for your camera.

You will not need it for concerts (the stages are well lit for the video they are shooting), but for editorial and event photography it is perfect.

The only one better is the 580EX.

The ETTLII flash that got the highest rating is the Quantum Q flash T5D. 2nd came the The Metz 58AF1 and 3rd came the Canon 580EXII. These were all in Will Crockett's reviews. I've only used the Canon 580EXII of the 3 and I like it quite well.
That 580EX that you were shown is not as good as the 580 EXII, I own both and only keep the 580 EX as a back up.

580EX II isa good one

That is the one I use with my XTi and it works great.

Flexible and easy to use.
