oils are good for this effect because they give you a closer effect to reality.... white paint is the trick,i usually do the painting as normal... eg paint the trees and landscape... if you paint a line across the trees in white-like a beam coming from the sky... and blend it in with the colour of the trees underneath it will seem like a beam of light....like just blend around the outside of the beam with the tree colour underneath... hope that makes sense... same goes if you wanted to put a shine on something-e.g an apple... have a red apple and put a white speck in the top right hand corner of the apple and blend around the speck to create a shine, the paint underneath has to be stil wet and that is why oils are so good-because you can blend and make things look quitr realistic, using shade and light....hard to say without demonstrating but hope that helps xxx

You DON'T draw the light. Shade everything but the light. The light has to be the brightest point on the paper. So basically shade the area around the light especially dark so as to make the light even brighter by contrast.
