#1. The one in red may be the head honcho, or in the wrong
place. It really lends itself to a caption contest. Like
chick in red is saying "Does my bum look big in this?"
#2.Where has she been, the ballerina coming up the stairs.
Is she a newbie?
Has she been for a dangerous liaison with her lovér?
Is she just late and expecting grief from the teacher?
Has she just been to the toilet after some dodgy
fois-gras at lunch?
#4 Like this one. Woman with the paper obviously
has zero interest in ballet and is making it very clear.
She is either waiting for somebody or is the cleaner
and waiting for the fiasco (in her eyes) to finish so she
can clean up.
#5 Oh dear. This was a lunchtime special. The lack of detail
in this one says that he was either in a hurry when he
painted it or was the worse for wear. Pretty shabby work
compared to the detail in the others.

The most important thing to remember about Degas's dancers is that he wanted to show pure reality. Not pomp and pretty colors...but tired muscles, pain, and boredom. Look at the pic of the woman reading the paper. This is not the fantastic. It's the essence of what goes into all creative works: struggle.

He didn't paint dancers...he painted movement, the light of those women and their struggle to present the trickery of beauty.

I don't mean this in a rude way at all, but if you want us to research your assignment for you, you need to at least include the titles, and the exact wording of your assignment. Did your teacher literally just say, "Interpret these paintings?" Did she let you have your pick of the artist, or did you get to pick them? Degas doesn't seem a very good subject for interpretation, as he mostly painted "snapshots" of life. He resented being called an impressionist, and mocked the plein air painters. I am happy to help, but don't feel I can offer the right information without the assignment:)

The only thing I can tell you that that he might have particularly emphasized in his paintings is that he painted a lot of working women, whether ballerinas, prostitutes, or laundresses (remember...back then, ballet was not what it is now. It was often lower class girls, from poor families that particpated in the ballet...some even ended up prostitutes). It has been suggested that he hated women (Not my suggestion...just a suggestion). He also focused on the awkward relationships between men and women, and it has also been suggested that he has never had sex (though only Degas will really know, I'm sure;)

Also, I see that Mary Cassatt is a subject in one of the paintings in another post you made; she was also an artist and studied under Degas. Look her up. That should help.

Do you get to pick ANY Degas paintings? Or just these? Because I see that you have listed different paintings in other posts.

Also, Did your teacher give you a list of points to build off off (such as, "why is the girl in red?" )

Anyway, maybe that will give you a small insight into his psyche and give you something to build off of.

Cheers:)

Maybe you should have done your homework instead of partying.

you should have chosen another artist becuase if you see the inherent beauty of degas' ballerinas, you would have plenty to talk about. Otherwise its just hard tot ell you what to say. Pick something that fascinates you, first rule of any good paper
