Degas liked to paint the night life-often a seedy side of it of course in the bars. This was probably an elder patron-

what's to get? there's a tension as a child becomes an adult and then a child again, old and drunk or young, or wonton or innocent. we can't tell what's amiss, but it doesn't look quite right. it is discomfitting. what do YOU think?

theres not a whole lot to get... mostly with Degas its about the application of paint... his impressionistic atyle and nothuge underlying secret themes... either you cant handle talking about art at all (which is fine) or your professor/teacher is over analytical and trying to discuss meaning that isnt there.

Degas' arent that complicated, it is what it is... what you said already is valid... "she looks like she's a little girl playing dress up but it's actually a woman."

thats EXACTLY it.... discuss... you cant tell if its old or young, a girl or an old lady.... expand
