Help with painting interpretation??

Question:i don't understand why this artist drew this painting. can someone tell me what is going on in this painting?
why did the artist use the colors he did?
why does the man look like he's transparent?

Edgar Degas is not one of my favorite Impressionists.
All I can tell you is that this scene looks like a dressing room.
Degas did a series of ballet dancers which remind me of this painting. This might have been one of his earlier works where his colors seem drab & pointless.
I can't explain the transparentcy. Maybe he was just trying to get everything to blend in.
