Position:Home>Visual Arts> I need help with art project?

Question:I've chosen obesity as my subject, and collected half a dozen close ups of people eating food. Now I need ideas what I can use these pictures for, I have to do a painting that includes these photos.

Any ideas for what I could paint and how I could use the photos in the painting?

(Doesn't necessarily need to be a painting, but I'm better off doing one.)

Thanks in advance =)

Paint a silhouette of an obese person lying on a sofa and place the pictures inside the belly of the person.
Or you could look at the work of Robert Rauschenberg and see how he combined collage and paint in a pop art style. If you use a Rauschenberg style, you can transfer the pictures by using gel medium...very tedious, but it works. You could also do multiples of the pictures by using the copy machine, adjusting for different sizes for emphasis. Combining the pictures with words would also be effective.
Look at the artwork of Freud....cellular realism....some really disgusting cellulite in harsh lighting, for inspiration.

your project do your own ******* work!

what about a painting of a really fat person, and on the belly put all your pictures of people stuffing their faces...
perhaps you could use grease for paint!

mmmm im a painter and if it was my project i would get the photos out and play around with them and a view finder,a view finder is a home made square like frame(made from paper) that you can place over the photos to choose an interesting square angle to paint.... i would do an abstract painting by choosing a section of the photos that is colourful and an interesting shape.... does that make sense... in the end i would stick the photos with the view finder onto some backing boad to show as your prep work...and the finished painting will look colourful and will stil capture the essance of what your theme is... hope that is clear to follow xx

There's more causes for obesity than eating. Not enough exercise because of lazing around the television or having no time to exercise because of work or other responsibilities, genetic probability, having to buy cheap vitamin-lacking food instead of healthy food because of financial difficulties. Obesity does not equal fat, either. I'd make a collage of it. If you're painting it, perhaps do each different part of the picture on the canvas in a different medium. Watercolor, hard pastel, ink, et cetera.

Just crop on closely on the people eating- sounds like a good series to me! Maybe you could paint a triptych of a baby, child, then adult eating...

or just a triptych of close ups of people eating, zooming in with each piece.

OR maybe just one big painting, sectioned off into squares, and pick a "square" from each pictures that most accurately depicts the picture, and paint that square on the canvas...a bunch of different squares, different sizes, from different photos:)

If you want to see an artist who paints obese people beautifully, check out Jenny Saville. She paints a lot of liposuction/plastic surgery patients, and does it beautifully.

Be sure that when painting obese flesh you consider areas or warm and cool flesh- a lot of obese people have circulatory problems, so the arms will be warmer than areas like the buttocks or stomach. Makes those cooler, and more translucent:)

Wish I could see your painting. Sounds cool.

It might be of use to have a look at the DESIGN process. You may or may not wonder as to why I would advise this - but it will help you.

Start off by collecting images of other artists who have tackled such an issue and write down what you like in the best images. Take lots of visual research i.e photos etc.

Develop your work by collaging, writing, etc etc to dvelop your work away fromthe obvious, although this largely depends on the type of conclusion you want to reach, your style and your medium.
