Position:Home>Visual Arts> What's a good way to photographing backlit people.?

Question:I want to avoid taking pictures of people where they appear black due to having the sun shining behind their back.

Here's the situation I think I will be encountering.
I'll be at a wedding taking some pictures.
The time will be roughly around 4:00 - 6:00pm.
The subject will very like have their backs against the sun.
I will have a camera with a flash. As you may guess, since it's a wedding there will not be anytime to position people, use reflectors, etc.

What's the best way to get the most with back lit subjects. Should I should with a flash at an angle? 45%?

Thanks in advance.

Just use the flash fill feature on your camera. Holding your flash at 45 degrees will give your image a different look but that is up to you. By 45% do you mean reducing your flash output by 45%? Actually the increase and decrease of flash output is in 1/3 stop increments.

Before the next wedding do some tests .. that is always the best way to solve problems ... long before the assignment.

I agree with fhotoace. Use fill light from either an external source like a speedlight, or a white reflector to bounce the light from behind your subjects back onto them. If using a speedlight, try using an omni-bounce diffuser (at a 45 degree angle), which is especially useful for groups of people.
