Surface Pattern Design and abstract paintings?

Question:Are there any illustrators/artists/designers that merge surface pattern design with painting? Can the two be mixed succesfully? Could anyone please point me in the direction of any designers that have done so? Cheers

The Op Art work of Victor Vasareli and Bridget Riley was used in the 60's on a variety of posters,clothes and shop designs, ask any old mod or hippy.
