Art critics have to find hidden meanings in everything. They want to convince us that we are idiots that don`t see anything.
So they invent just to show how smart they are, using very long and out of natural use words for the same purpose.
And not only critics. Freud also made an analysis of the picture, and there is some theory that the Mona Lisa del Giocondo, is a self portrait, because he was homosexual.
It`s just a marvelous picture, the most famous in the world, and enjoy it and don′t listen to stupid tales.
Modern or actual critics are just worse. They are underpaid by magazines or newspapers so they get a bribe of the artist, or maybe a picture as a gift, the worst he cannot sell.
And if they convince some rich and stupid people to buy, because that painter is "the wave of the future", he gets an additional commision. And may be some other rich and stupid people, because they ran together in bunches, also buys, well, they are in business.

Leonardo did the things on purpose. Of course, the text is open to interpretations he even did not dream of, but basically he he did lot of things on purpose.

No doubt that DaVinci was a genius: Left brained, right brained, brilliant.

Yes, I think critics read too much in to paintings and other works of art. The most exaggerated example of this kind of thinking is so called "subliminal suggestion" in which we supposedly see hidden meanings in paintings, literature, advertising, "Subtle" certainly exists, but subliminal is 90% myth. If I say the Mona Lisa is a hidden code that exemplifies the glory of motherhood, a certain percentage of the population will believe it. And another (hopefully small) group will believe that the painting is a secret messager to devil worshipers.

Modern art is surely more subject to wild interpretation than classic art. Some is beautiful, exotic, meaningful. Some is trash masquerading as art.

The idea that the "Mona Lisa" was painted by a simple mind with a singular idea is naive. Leonardo da Vinci was a very complicated creator, and relished in thinking about things. Art historians may have added to the variations on his thought processes, but I would say that was intended by the artist too.
