Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: acrylic? I am on a budget. Ad also, what medium is best to paint on??

i agree with the first answer, maybe try acrylics first too, because i personally find them easier to use than watercolours. to start with i'd just use paper, but proper painting paper or cartilidge paper, otherwise the paper will get all wet and curl up.

For a starter, water colour, then acrylic, as oils are a trickier medium for a beginner. They are also more expensive.

Start whit tempera,it's great medium.

The most common types of paint used are acrylic, oils, water-based oils, watercolor, and pastel. None is better or significantly easier to master than the other. Which one is right for you depends to a large extent on your personality (take the Paint Personality Quiz on the above website), whether you're allergic to solvents, and how long you're prepared to wait for paint to dry.

Many start with acrylics because they dry quickly, mix and clean up with water, and it's easy to paint out and hide mistakes. Acrylics can also be used on just about any surface, so you can paint on paper, canvas, or board.

My favorite is acrylic I like it because you can water it down and make it look like watercolor or you can use it as is and the colors are so vibrant the only issue with acrylic is that it dries very quick but you can get a solution that can cause it to slow down the drying process anyway just my thoughts

Acrylics if you live with people and you don't want to stink the place up. : )

Watercolors if you are a person that can go with the flow, including the sometimes uncontrollable qualities of watercolor.

Oil sticks are great because they allow you to draw your paintings, then you spread the color with turpentine or some other extender, and they give you better control which equals to less money spent on more paint to cover up the paint that you may have made a mistake with! ....whew! that was a mouthful!

Have fun!!!!

agree with 1st start on canvas it rocks paper sucks cardboard is good for acrylic

I will have to agree with the majority with one exception. Start with either watercolor or gauche. Both are similar, but gauche is much like acrylic. The better you become with not just mixing paints in watercolor, but also with thinning or thickening the paint for various purposes will make it so much easier for the other three - gauche, acrylic and oil.

Watercolor can be done on so many materials. Practice on paper, cardboard, foam board, etc. Heck! Practice on junk mail. The more you practice at anything the better you become.

A book I highly recommend is "The Ultimate Guide to Painting from Photographs" by James Markle and Layne Vanover.
