Tagging, Graffiti & Art ?

This is not a simple issue.

The auction of Banksy’s wall proves that there is an Graffiti Esthetic that has commercial value. Banksy’s esthetic is really quite special, humorous and pointedly political. It shows that Graffiti can give value to property…

but there is a hugh HOWEVER…

The majority of the “graffiti” is tagging and has little or no value. It is expensive to remove…and anyone with a 2 dollar can of spray paint can cause hundreds of dollars if not thousands of damage to property. Making it difficult for owners to restore their property to its original condition.

Perhaps there should be public places where this activity could be allowed.. The levees along the Los Angeles River are an example of a “canvas” that would be suitable and there could be other areas…

there are different kinds, the ones that look like art can be very good :) but if its just a scribble then nah

99% of graffiti is just ugly scribbling on the wall. It is a shame that it has taken over our cities.
It personifies everything that is ugly and horrible about living in a large city.

I HATE IT !

depends on where and what it is.
Like the people who do graffiti on my block are vandles and i want to kill them!
But liek if you walk by on the street and there is this big mural on the wall with garffiti i would consider it art.

well some forms of it can be really cool looking and artistic but some with like swear words and crap are vandalism

I think it's cool.
And yes it is ART.

Im from New York City and back in the 80's you would see the inside of the trains full of tags and dirty...that I hated but the most beautiful thing to me was to see a train roll into the station with big colorful piece covering the whole outside of the train.
That's a sight you dont see anymore. I wish that someone would have saved some of those trains and put them in museums.

If I was a millionaire, I would have bought one and owned a big warehouse loft and put one in the space as an art piece.

yh i think graffiti is great although not in all cases. i would love to master it. i know it is like vandalism but that is sort of the essence of graffiti. if ts not done on a brick wall or somthng then it wouldnt be the same
