I think this is sort of the meaning.
Sometimes in life we have troubles that we cannot seem to fix, or we feel as if we are trapped in our own demise. It seems we are trapped way down inside a dark cavern, or cave and don't know how to free ourselves.
But most of the time when we find ourselves trapped in a inner situation (our minds working overtime), that is when we go deep inside ourselves, and usually answer our own questions.
Other times ( if you believe in God), the cave is the deepest
darkest time in our lives, and when we get so down that we curse God and ask him how he would let these things happen to us, it is then that we find out how we got where we are in the first place. We ether try to fix what has been screwed up, or we don't. It can be a closed door, or an open door.
My version

Are you talking about Plato's Myth of the Cave, in which we are people in a cave and all we can see of the real world are shadows..?

Try asking this in YA Religion and you'll probably get more results. I'm curious to this answer myself.
