It depends on what type of portraits you're doing. If it's a couple or a small group, the 35 works. For single close-ups, the 50 gets in super close for the glamor shots.

50mm (100mm) is exactly what portrait photographers use ... actually from 85mm to 105mm has been the standard for over 40 years when using a 35mm lens

50 mm (= 100 mm on yours) is perfect for a portrait. The subject is not too close to you--and you're not too far away either.
