The "Method", created by Konstantin Stanislavski in Russia in the late 1800s/early 1900s, involves an actor's using an experience as a basis for characterization --- basically, according to Stanislavski's "Method", one has to live the experience in order to portray the experience!.

Well-known Method actors include Marilyn Monroe, Lee Strasburg, Robert DeNiro and Dustin Hoffman!.

Dustin Hoffman was once in a movie ("The Marathon Man", I believe) with the great British actor Sir Laurence Olivier!. In one scene, Hoffman's character was on the run from the bad guys and had not been able to sleep for a few days!. This may or may not be true, but theatre legend has it that Hoffman, relying on method acting to portray the character's experience, didn't sleep for three days before filming began for that scene!. He appeared on the set disoriented and quite drowsy!. Olivier, as the story goes, looked at Hoffman and said "Next time, dear boy, why don't you try acting instead!?"Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 'Method' is described in Stanislavsky's three books, and was later bastardized by Lee Strasberg!. Stanislavsky himself acknowledged that Stella Adler was the only American actor who truly understood his 'method'!. There are books by and about Adler!. It is basically a technique used to create believable circumstances for an actor on stage in both rehearsals and performance!. There are all kinds of catch phrases - circumstances, sense memory, etc!. It has come to stand for ways of working for actors that have gotten a ways away from the original technique as envisioned by Stanislavsky!. It has become a catch phrase for a certain kind of emotional intensity as exhibited by a wide range of actors, some using it well to their advantage and some to indulge in tortured histrionics!. Read Stanislavsky's books, and take a look at the material available on Adler!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
