Question: Have you seen Wicked, the musical!? What were your thoughts on it!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Wicked is an amazing show!. No matter what other cynical people say about it not having a good story are just plain wrong!. It has strong female characters, and teenage girls readily identify with one of the two lead women!. It is not a classic show, and it isn't meant to be like any musicals based in our world because it takes place in Oz!.

I absolutely love Wicked and have seen it twice!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I thought it was technically astonishing - and I work in theatre so big sets and clever illusions are nothing new to me!. However, I don't think the music is particularly original (have a listen to Witches of Eastwick, which pre-dates Wicked, and you'll hear a lot of similarities) or anything special - compared with Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter or Sondheim, it's not anything to write home about!. Yes, there are catchy tunes and the big power ballads (it does take something special to be able to belt Defying Gravity) but it doesn't have the musical integrity that Sondheim does!. also, to me, the show felt rather empty and heartless - however that could have been the production (although it was on Broadway) rather than the show!. The best thing about the show, I thought, was the design of it, it all looked beautiful!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I hated it!. I knew it had a lot of flaws the first time I saw it back in 2006!. I recently saw it again and I thought all the flaws were magnified!. The script can be written by a 5th grader and sprinkled with ridiculous corny horrible jokes, As Long as You're Mine didn't fit the rest of the score (it was written in the 70s), Popular uses too much gimmicks to make the audience laugh and Glinda just comes off as annoying, and it tries to tackle big issues, but if there ever was a musical that epically failed at that, it's Wicked!. The show tries to pretend that it's deep, but it's not!. The characters, with hte exception of Nessarose and the Wizard, are all poorly written!. Glinda, a deep character in the book, had been reduced to a blonde ditz who's second act transformation wasn't explained!. Boq and Fiyero are both extremely shallow characters (how they were written, not personality wise)!. All and all, I think spectacle is the reason this show was so popular!. It's not every show you see someone fly!. They use that to mask all it's flaws!. It worked in Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon, and using spectacles to mask flaws obviously worked in Wicked!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
