Question: Romeo and Juliet line!?
What is showing about Benvolio on this line!? (e!.g!. peaceful, fiery)

Benvolio:'Or reason coldly of your grieveness
Or else depart; here all eyes gaze on us'

Does this line show Benvolio as a peaceful man!? Shakespeare really confuses me :S

Benvolio wants to avoid trouble!. If there is a scrape, he counsels Mercutio retire to a more private place!. Prior to the lines you quoted, Mercutio and Benvolio are arguing and Benvolio even teases Mercutio, "If I were as apt to quarrel as thou art!.!.!."

In the opening act, Benvolio tries to break up another scrape between the Montigues and the Capulets before he is called out by Tybalt!. I would say that he is constantly trying to keep the peace!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes, Benvolio is trying to keep the peace here!. In modern English we often use temperature as a metaphor for emotions or states of mind!. We talk about cool heads and hot tempers!. We say "chill" to mean "relax" or "calm down!." Shakespeare used language in much the same way!. Benvolio is saying, "Either talk out your differences calmly and rationally, or if you must fight, don't fight here in public where everybody can see you!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think it does!.

He's effectively saying calmly explain why you're upset (reason coldly) or go away!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
