I have not seen the movie, but I can tell you a little about the play!. In the play the idea of the community versus the individual is a theme that runs throughout!. The community of Salem sought to keep itself together by casting out undesirable individuals, and in so doing created the atmosphere necessary for the witch hunts!. Individuals have a powerful influence - consider the influence of a young girl such as Abigail!. However, group mentality and hysteria is also apparent, as evidenced by the witch hunts themselves!.
