Merchant of Venice is about a man(Antonio) who tells a Jewish shop-owner(Shylock) that if he cannot pay him for his goods he will let the shop-owner cut out one pound of his flesh!. When the man cannot repay him he goes back on his word!. The shop-owner, furious, takes him to "court" to get him to give the pound of flesh!. Out of fury he decides that when he is told he can remove the flesh he will cut out the man's heart!.

Meanwhile, Portia, a wealthy young heiress hoping to marry her love Bassanio, dresses a law clerk to help save Antonio!.

However, the "courts" decide in favor of Shylock and he is told to cut out one pound of Antonio's flesh!.

In the climatic ending Portia tells Shylock that yes he can cut out one pound of flesh, but should he spill a single drop of blood he will violate the courts orders and he will be killed!.

Shylock is left with no choice but to let it go!. Antonio lives and Portia marries Bassiano!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
