The best advice I've ever heard was to go through the song you want to sing word by word and try to get some meaning out of it!. Ask yourself: what is the writer trying to say here!? Try out different ways of singing each phrase (like emphasizing different words, singing some parts softer, some louder, etc!.) to see how it affects the piece, then choose the ways you think work best!. Above all, make the song your own!. Don't copy off of how other people sing the song; look at it from YOUR perspective and sing it how YOU think it should be sung (while staying true to the author's intent, of course!)

As for the fundamental parts of singing!.!.!.good for you for learning how to use your body properly! Don't forget to stand straight with your shoulders back and relaxed, chin level with the floor (head straight ahead) and hands at your sides!. A relaxed body sings much better than a tense one, so try to keep all your muscles loose except for the ones your using to sing (like the muscles in your abdomin) especially the muscles in your neck! Keep em loose, and sing your heart out!.
