i took hamlet at A level and got a B, so hopes this helps, im a bit rusty tho lol!
the king is giving a speech on the death of his poor brother (this happens to be irony of course beacuse as you find out its him that killed his brother)
notice the stage directions here, shakespeare rarely gave stage directions, all stage were mention in speech (eg weather, setting and costume) hamlet is dress all in black for the mourning of his father, but from what hamlet says to the king alot more can be taken from it!.

the king speaks directly to hamlet calling him a son (hamlets next line is in strong disagreement to this, he thinks they are very differnent even if they are related!. the king and queen (step-father and mother) ask y he is so depressed " why seems it so partiucular with thee!?" hamlets line after this is a great one!. (seems means to pretend) hamlet is furious his mother thinks him to be pretending to mourn for his father!. he is saying in these lines, i dont just wear the tradional black clothing so people thinks im upset, i am actually upset!
the kings lines following this basically means that he is being "unmanly" and that he defies heaven itself by not letting go of his grief, of course all of this annoys hamlet even more!. the king and queen then convices him to stay in denmark!.
hamlet then has one of his many famous monologes, where he compares his unlce (the king) to his father "that was to this hyperion to a satye (in english: his father is a sun god and his uncle is a half man half goat creature) he talks of his mother and fathers love, and how weak woman are "frailty thy name is woman" (from his experance woman are weak, and they female characters within the play dont help to change this) then enter hamlets friends there are several jokes in this part about the funeral meats being used at the wedding and hamlet seeing his father in his minds eyes, when his friends in fact saw his ghost!. in ends in hamlet suspecting foul play!.
you have to remember when reading hamlet, that he isnt a child he is in his 30s, the first time i read it i thought he was about 18 but not so!.

hope this helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
