Question: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA SEQUEL!! OUTRAGEOUS OR NOT!?!?!?
OK, who thinks that making a sequel to the Phantom of the Opera, the BEAUTIFUL London musical is outrageous and completely idiotic on Andrew Lloyd Webber's part!? What was he thinking!? POTO should be left alone! The story's not MEANT to carry on, it should remain a mystery! It's going to be called "Phantom: Once Upon Another Time"!. How cheesy is that!? How could they do this!?!? How could they butcher a timeless, beautiful musical like that!? A BOOK is even being written as sequel! How insulting is that to poor Mr!. G!. Leroux!? AND, to add insult to injury, Mr!. Webber wants Gerard Butler to be in the West End performance!. NO THANKS!! That man does not BELONG on stage, I didn't even think he was well suited for the movie, let alone a live production!. His voice just isn't!.!.!.right!.

Does anyone agree with me that the idea of making a sequel to go onstage in London/Broadway is absolutely insane!? What about casting Mr!. Butler onstage!? You don't have to agree with me on both counts!. But does anyone else agree!?

P!.S!. If it does truly come out in London, in November 2009 as planned, I'm not going to go see it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

wow that would be horrible whenever they make sequels they always suck i mean look at jaws, cinderella, and Halloween!. When you add on to classics it makes it worse!. The only great sequel any has made is wicked to the wizard of oz!. If they make a Phantom of the Opera 2, it will flop so bad!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Actually, Webber recently said he wanted the Phantom's role to John Barrowman!. A better choice than Butler!.

However the sequel itself should not be taking place!. I believe it's a poor choice, built on a poor novel!. On top of that, according to reports on his release of act 1 (if they are reliable), he appears to have changed the plot in such a way as to make it worse rather than mend the glaring mistakes in the Phantom of Manhatten plot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You realize that even if you hate the sequel, the first one still exists as it is, right!? It's not like they're burning all the scripts of the original!. It is and always will be the same show you fell in love with!.

And as for how Weber could do it!.!.!. he probably looked at how much money he could make!. If this show shares even a fraction of the success POTO had, he'll make a killing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

My pretend husband Gerard Butler is a rock singer (he had a band for a while before he started acting) and I think he did a fabulous job in the movie The Phantom of the Opera, but no I wouldn't want my Boo on stage!. (By the way, that's why Webber liked him!. He liked the idea of a slightly rugged sounding Phantom and he got that in Gerry!.)

In the The Phantom of the Opera book that Gaston Leroux, the Phantom dies!. Although there are literally hundreds of fan fics that have been published into to books, I have never read them and honestly there is no point since the real phantom Erik has died in the original!. That's like trying to resurrect Mufasa in The Lion King it just doesn't work!. I like that in the musical he just disappears!. But either way disappearing or dying the Phantom is gone there is no need to try to bring him back!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with you to a point, but not all the way!. I agree with the first answer of this question, it is useless to get so upset about it!.!.!.the first and original one will still be there, it will always be there forever!. We'll all know how beautiful and flawless that show is!. If Andrew Lloyd Webber said he's going to write it, he will!. There's not stopping him!. I don't know if the part about wanting Gerard is true!. How can you ever be sure about what you are reading on the internet or in anything!. So many rumours go around!.

The sequel to the book has ALREADY been written!. It's Frederick Forsyth's "The Phantom of Manhattan"!. I wouldn't totally go ape-crazy about this, Andew wrote the beautiful music for the FIRST stage show, didn't he!? I THINK he somewhat knows what he's doing!.

I agree with you that the story is not meant to be carried on!. Erik was redeemed in the end and he sacrificed everything for the love of his life, Christine Daae!. That is what makes the story so beautiful and tragic!. It's not like in the sequel the Phantom get's his happy ending!.
*SPOILER*
Christine gets shot and dies, and Erik get's his son that he had with Christine!. The son chooses his real father, Erik, over the man who has cared for him all of his life, Raoul!. So it's not like the story is totally different!. The Phantom still loses Christine!.

and I ABSOLUTELY 100% agree with you about not wanting Gerard as the onstage Phantom in the sequel!. The man's voice SUCKS, I'm sorry to all you "Gerik Phans" out there!. He couldn't even sing all of the songs in the movie, and his voice is NOT Angelic and operatic like I believe Erik's voice should be!. Whatever though!. There's nothing that can be done!. I am not totally opposed, but I am not thrilled about it!.

If you are so opposed, then don't go and see it!. It might not be that bad, really!. I wouldn't count on Gerard being the onstage Phantom!.!.!.like I said before, rumours are always flying and you never know until you see the show!.

I don't know about Outrageous!. What's the point in getting all upset and emotional about something you have no control over!? It's not going to butcher the original (the film did that), the Phantom of the Opera will remain as it is!. Hopefully!. Lloyd Webber does love to re-work and chop and change his shows around!. Phantom's the least meddled with, but this may be its time!. I do agree that as it is, the show doesn't NEED a sequel! It ends perfectly!. I really don't like the Anti-Raoul nature of the sequel!.

I don't think the sequel is a good idea as a stage show - ok, so Phantom has been seen by a vast number of people, but a sequel relies on the audience having seen the original first!. This works in films, but I can't see how it would work onstage!. I think it would be a better idea to make a sequel to the Phantom film, as a film!. Then they could sell it at the theatre too - it'd be rather cool to see a show, then buy the sequel on your way home to find out "what happened next!?"

What does annoy me is that Lloyd Webber likes to recycle his music!. The song written for Phantom 2, sung on his 50th birthday concert, "The Heart Is Slow To Learn", was re-used in "The Beautiful Game" as "Our Kind of Love" - a much nicer song!. But "The Beautiful Game" has been re-written and the song taken out!. I'm sure it'll be back in Phantom 2!. also, one of my favourite songs from "Starlight Express" - "There's Me", has been taken out of the show!. I think he is going to use it in Phantom 2 as well!. It is in style more like Phantom than the rest of Starlight - it's sweet and has a music-box nature to it rather than rock'n'roll!. But he's damaging a couple of his very good shows to make this sequel!.

But we, as audience, can only do one thing about this whole sorry mess - don't go see the sequel!.
