I lived in London, and it depends on the context!. Some theaters decide to use the spelling "theatre" to sound old worldly!. In the states, you will be considered incorrect to use the spelling theatre in an essay or something!. Use theater in the US, theatre in England or if you're quoting from an article or theater with that spelling!.

They are both accepted spellings, like grey and gray!.

I find that stage type theaters tend to refer to themselves as a "theatre", while a movie type theater is "theater"!.

Theatre is basically the French spelling, and we got the word from them!. Some people changed the spelling to make more sense for English!. Since stage theaters are more classic and traditional, maybe that is why they prefer the original spelling!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There really isn't a difference, the two words are interchangeable!. Theatre is the British spelling and Theater is the American spelling!.
