Question: Acting question about cold readings!?
I've been reading alot of books about the art of acting, and in a few of them i've heard the term cold readings!. I know it's when you have a script thrown at you and you don't have alot of time to rehearse it, but I was wondering if you can actually read through it, rehearse it a little in your head, or if your so clueless about the script that your just reading lines off of a piece of paper and trying to make a good impression at the same time!. I'm hoping it's the former!. I've started taking acting classes, and I thought i'd act just to get a heads up on it!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

A cold read doesn't mean the casting director forces you to read the script two seconds after she handed it to you!. They usually do let you exit the room and take a few minutes for yourself!. You should absolutely take that time to break down the sides (few pages of script) and discern your character and the choices he/she will make!.

It's important to understand that you are not being asked to have a thorough understanding of the entire script when you're handed a few pages to cold read!. They want to see if you can make choices and adjustments!. If they want to see something specific or if the director wants to tweak what you're doing they'll speak up and ask you to make the adjustment!.
