Question: In professional theatre would an actor with a smaller part to play be required for less rehearsal time!?

This also depends on production values!. For example, if actors not in a scene are responsible for making scene changes, you would be required to be there more!. But just for the rehearsal of your lines, you should be in rehearsal less!. The gravediggers in Hamlet should much less rehearsal time required than Hamlet!. There again, however, in Shakespearean plays many roles are "doubled" so the gravediggers may also play another role in an earlier scene!. But most professional companies don't want to waste your time with sitting around like some companies at lower rungs on the "professionalism ladder" and part of this is due to more experienced directors and stage managers who can stick to a schedule!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

theoretically yes, but sometimes that is not the reality of the situation!. it's a little bit more subjective, of course!. let's say you have a minor character that doesn't have but a few lines, BUT they happen to be onstage!.!.!.you would be required to be there because you need to know the blocking!. if you have a minor character with very few lines and the same exact stage time, then you could reasonably expect to not have to be there all the time!. then again, you enter subjective mode!. if you are in community theatre, and this is the situation, i would suggest speaking privately with the director and see if a compromise can't be reached!. if not, find other things to occupy your time!. memorizing, working on set pieces or props!. if you are getting paid!.!.!.suck it up! you're getting paid!. same thing: memorize lines, volunteer to paint, there's always something to do to help!. but you really need to know your situation!. and if you're recieving compensation for your time, you really don't have room to complain!.
