Certainly as a DUAL,,, no matter the reason, One inhabits levels of the UPPER crust, while the other slinks about in the lower alleys of Life in that period of time!.

Sad too, in my opinion, that the piece wasn't written actually creating HYDE as the more sane, viable, intelligent character, although it has been said, "There is a pleasure in madness, only a madman can know!."

In a very OLD Hollywood film sense the "Blackouts" / fade outs while being the only method of the day, were very suggestive and analogous in the 2 character changes!.

This book is set among the upper middle class of Victorian England!. The reason!? Stevenson wanted to examine social strata!.
Thus Jekyll is the epitome of upper class respectability and Hyde is the personification of "The Great Beast" -- the much-feared proletariat or Untermenschen, which Victorian England, when not ignoring it, ground it under foot!.
