First of all, find out which play it is!. You never want to sing a song from the play your auditioning for unless the director specifically asks you to do so!. The director may have an idea of what he/she wants the character you're auditioning for to sound and act like!. If you are different than that, he/she may write you off immediately and not give you a chance to show him/her your stuff!.

Secondly, pick something you are familiar with!. Don't choose a song from a musical you've never seen or even researched before!.

Thirdly, please please PLEASE don't sing a pop song for your audition!. The sort of singing and vocal performance that is related to pop music is totally different than that of a musical!. Stick to Broadway stuff!. Your audition will showcase your talent in a more applicable way!.

Fourthly (!?), if your voice may not be the bestest best voice out of all the people auditioning, choose a song where you can show off your acting chops!. I always say "50% of singing is acting"!.

Lastly, here are a few ideas:
1!. In my Own Little Corner - Roger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella
2!. Belle REPRISE - Disney's Beauty and the Beast on Broadway
3!. I Know Things Now - Into the Woods

PS Most directors don't let you sing an entire song!. It would take too long to audition everybody if they got to sing the song all the way through!. So you can choose 16 bars of music (or maybe one total minute) that is the best part of the song so you don't waste your time with intro music or weak melody lines!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

To help the Directors/Producers/Other Casting Agents visualize you in the part, it is probably best to sing something from the play you are auditioning for!.

Directors tend to be creative types!. But, Producers are usually numbers, and hence money people, they may not be able to translate how your performance of a piece from another play might indicate your ability to take on the works in theirs!. If you show you can sing the roof off, or bring the house down, they should jump at the chance to have you!.

Alternately, choose a piece, not necessarily from a play, that showcases your vocal range, and interpretive abilities!.

Good Luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
