"Legs" in traditional theatre scenery are the flats on either side of stage masking the wings!.
When the front curtain or "tabs" were lowered and raised at the end of a performance, there was a danger that they could knock into the legs and break them!.
Therefore "Breaking a leg" means that there were so many curtain calls at the end (a successful production!) that the legs got broken!Www@QuestionHome@Com
