Question: Is the 1968 movie "The Producers", written by Mel Brooks, a musical or just a comedy!?
I've never seen the old one but I've seen the one with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The 1968 movie is not a musical!. The new movie is!. To be honest, the old one is pretty pathetic!. The Hitler who "ruins" the play is a stoned hippy, not a gay guy!. The only reason to watch is for Franz Leibkind!. He has some more fun lines about Winston Churchill!. Stick with the new one!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The 1968 movie was not a musical, but it had the same plotline as the 2001 Broadway Musical (also from Mel Brooks) and the 2005 movie bsed on the musical!. It's still hilarious!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1968 producers has one fully staged musical number "spring time for Hitler" other than that its a comedy!. its a much better film than the recent remakeWww@QuestionHome@Com

I would say it's a comedic musical!. Never a big fan though, too slapstick for my taste, and the beatnik character doesn't really stand up over time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was a comedy!. You should rent it - it's much better than the stage musical version and the new movie!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

its a Musical Comedyy
