In looking at some of those answers I have to disagree!. I act, and no you do not have to be young to start and successful, though honestly it helps!. What do you have that is unique to you!? You have to be persistant, you have to be open to rejection!. In your case I would not study it, I would maybe affiliate myself with the drama department because practice is practice, but while persuing a fallback degree that you know you can excel in I would use free time for answering any and all casting calls!. The more you answer the more chances for exposure and to add items to your performers resume!. Once you get about 15 parts, be it commercials or otherwise, create a small dvd or cd-r of you in action, get some headshots and sumbit those along with a copy of your resume to any talent agency that meets your needs!. This will probably be a minimum of 30 agencies to start with, and every 3-6 months send postcards with a current photo of yourself on the front and what you are currently up to career wise on the back!. For talent agency addresses utilize things such as IMDB pro which is what I did after my first few IMDB credits!. If you persue both chances are your mom will be slighlty more supportive because you will succeed either way!. Feel free to message me if you need help and good luck

well i would listen to your mother on that one!. unless you wanna do like theatre acting which is not that great and very competive!. but most those theatre ppl have been acting since middle school or younger, have taken lessons, etc etc!. now if you wanna do acting in movies or something, then there is ABSOLUTELY NO competition!. because its basically impossible!. most famous actors dropped out of highschool, had friends or family already in the acting business that pulled strings to get them roles, and already lived in california right by hollywood!. if you wanna just do acting as a hobby or something then i would say go for it!. but if you wanna make a career out of it then im sorry, there is less than a 1 in a million chance!. i would listen to your mother and go to college and study something else!. maybe take a theatre class or two but just remember you will probably not be making a living off of acting!. you can have fun with it though as a hobby!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Are you interested at all in the inner workings of theatre -- the technical aspects like lighting and set design!? You could minor in Technical Theatre or it may have some other title but that is what it was at my University years ago and have marketable skills and still also take acting classes plus movement and directing!. That way you will be more likely to have a career in theatre and with you available you may well be a regular in one or the off Broadway theatres in NYC if that is where you are headed!.

Then at least you won`t have to wait tables until your big break and you will become an insider which always helps!.

There is less and less money in the theatre industry with this economy so being able to help out at the theatre on a number of levels will make you more attractive to the industry!. Sure it seems romantic to hit the streets with your headshot and go to the auditions printed in Variety but with that life comes poverty and living in a one room studio with seventeen of your closest friends (or squatting in some dump in an unsafe neighborhood) until you make it!.

And since so many people want to be actors and performers it really does not pay much until you make it to the top!.

Obviously it is your life and your decision but having multiple talents like set design or lighting or even props management on a university level and being able to do the technical things they are doing now in theatres like art on silkscreens in the background (I forget what that is called) will get you an in and you will have a better life overall!.

Only my $0!.02 of course!. ;-)Www@QuestionHome@Com

don't worry about getting an early start!.!.!.!.!. i graduate next year too and i plan to go to a UC and major in theatre arts!. that way if acting doesn't work out i have a general theatre background to use!. like Tina Fey!.!.!. when she's not acting she's doing everything else related to drama!. I had to fight my family a little too!. They kept telling me they wanted me to do something more secure!. I realized that the only think that would have to be secure in my life is happiness and theatre will bring me that!. My parents eventually saw my point of view!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you don't need to start young, basically if your good no matter how much experience you have you have a better chance of being successful!. as for your mom not supporting you, i would still do it, if its what you feel would be good for you then i think you should pursue acting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wouldn't say necessarily!.!.!. actors can be born at any age!. They may start young or old!. It doesn't matter! I know of 4 year old actresses and actresses that are 75! You can be sucessful no matter your age!. There is also no age limit!Www@QuestionHome@Com

you don't HAVE to start early but it is best!. ur on your own now so i guess if u pay for it, u should be allowed to do it!. just look for minor acting thigns in ur area at www!.auditions!.com and try to join an acting class!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

See if you can do an Arts and Performance degree!. But have a back up plan for when you are out of work!. Which statistically will be 85% of the time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
