Question: How to get out of a seeing a Broadway play without seeming close-minded!?
I'm trying to get out of seeing a Broadway play: The Lion King with my roommate and she's getting upset because I refuse to see it!. I'm no interested in theater and the arts and I've tried to invite her to my anime convention events and she never goes because she has no interest!. Now when I say no she says I'm so close minded and not worth going anywhere with!.

Facts: She's never been to an Anime convention and I've never been to a Broadway show!.

I know what a broadway show looks like and I couldn't care less about it, I'd rather go to an opera, symphony, or forced to go to a country western event than go to broadway!.

Any advice to settle this without me losing a friend!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Make a deal with her that you will see the show if she agrees to go to an anime convention!. We can't push our own interests on other people but of course we can wish for their company!. As the poster above mentioned you may just be awed by The Lion King!. Julie Taymor really did an amazing job with it!. But honestly if I had a friend tell me I was not worth going anywhere with they most likely would not be my first pick to share anything with!.

And I must point out two things!. One, you say you have never been to a Broadway show but you know what it looks like!. If you are basing that on what you believe or what you have seen on TV then you are not giving it a fair chance!. Until you are sitting in a theatre and the orchestra begins to play or the curtain opens, then you really can't know what the experience is like!. And two, by posting this under theatre and acting you will be getting responses from people like me who believe that life without theatre is no life at all!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, I agree with the previous post that the Lion King is an amazing show and I do think that your interest in anime would find Taymor's production at least visually interesting if not musically interesting!.

Ask yourself, is the friendship more important to me than 2 hours of boredom!?

I would go but ask her to join you at an anime convention in return!. Both of you should agree that if you absolutely hate the other one's favorite form of entertainment you will stick to seeing movies!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you are interested in anime and animation, you should be very interested in seeing how the wonderful Julie Taymore took animated characters and turned them into actors on the stage!. Before it opened, I was invited to a very early rehearsal when they were still developing the puppetry, etc!. It was fascinating!. Go to the show!. Pax-CWww@QuestionHome@Com

You and your friend are both being "close minded"!. You are making preconcieved ideas about a show, i know many people who are not interested in theatre who get blown away by professional productions!. enjoy the experience--regret something you've done; not something you haven't!!!! there are many people who would kill to be in your position!!!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Everybody else had some pretty good advice, I just wanted to add: give Broadway a chance! You might end up loving it! Since you've never been to one you don't know how fantastic they are!. Then at least if you don't like it afterwards you can have a good reason!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

lion king is really actually amazing, make a deal with her so that you two could do soemthing you want to do, but i suggest to go see lion king, it's amazingWww@QuestionHome@Com

Just tell her that if she goes with you to an Anime convention just once that you'll go with her to see a Broadway show just once!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I also think you would really like and appreciate the production design of The Lion King and should go this once!.

Make a deal that if you go to the Lion King with an open mind and look to have a good time as long as she will do the same at the next Anime event you want to take her to!.

I do think you should open your mind on this one!. There is something to be said for simply not being interested in some things and I admit I am biased because I am a playwright (not musicals) and love the theatre but would submit that not all Broadway shows are the same!.

And you will then have your roommate to go to Anime things in the future!.!.!.maybe!. ;-)Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm pretty much in line with what everybody else is saying!. I have to say there is a difference between like a whole day at an anime convention that doesn't interest you, and 2 hours at a play that doesn't interest you!. There's about 6 hours difference!.

Frankly, Broadway shows are more interesting than the symphony, and the people are way more talented than a country western show!. Most people I know who are into anime totally dig musicals and broadway shows!. I would imagine that you'll probably be very pleasantly surprised, especially with the Lion King!. That show is stellar, from an acting standpoint, a musical standpoint, and a visual standpoint!. Give it a shot, and then you have a bit of leverage to try and bring your friend with you to an anime convention!.

One last thing though, Fact, you've never been to a broadway show!. Tell me then, how is it that you KNOW what a Broadway show looks like if you've never been!? **raises eyebrow** I think you'd dig it!. give it a try!Www@QuestionHome@Com
