I would recommend finding a small theatrical group in your area and attempting to work your way into a director position!. Talk to theatres around you and see how directors got the coveted positions they did!. Once you are in the director's chair you can start to figure out what shows you can do with the budget and what you can't!. I think it's easier to get in with a theatrical group and do a show that way because they have a budget and you don't have to worry about not having money!. Since you are only a freshman I recommend also writing out your script and figure out your vision!. Then if your school has a good theatre program start there and then work your way up to community theatre!. Living in a city myself I notice that a lot of the original shows out here (if popular) will travel to NYC and be picked up there!. It's amazing how much I have heard about that lately!. It's definitely worth a shot, but you will have to start from the bottom and work your way up!. But if you start with a school theatrical group and then work your way up, by then your show will be tweaked and ready to be put on a more professional stage!.
As far as the music goes, if you want to borrow other famous musician's music you have to have written permission from their management!. That means you probably need to have management of your own that can request permission from the musician's managment!. They need to know that if you buy the rights that you are using it for an appropriate venue!. They want to make sure this music isn't being destroyed or putting the singer in a bad light!. Getting the rights can be hard, as some Broadway shows have even had a time of it!. So that part will be difficult!. Perhaps you could start with styling your songs after famous singers, without actually using their music!. Especially if you are first starting off!. Even if you are lucky enough to get the musical rights it will be so expensive you wouldn't be able to pay for that and a show!.
Cirque du Soleil does a show already called Love, which is inspired by the Beatles and their music!. I did hear from a pretty good source that the Beatles handed over their musical rights, and now anyone is allowed to use their music (I think you still have to pay for it thought)!. They now have no say as to who uses their music, which is probably how Across the Universe was made!. I hope this helps a bit!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you're a student, you may be able to make a deal with the copyright holders!. Some writers/composers allow students to perform their works for free or with very minimal royalties compared to normal!. (Especially if it is within school/college studies)

To get rights to perform any piece of work, you must contact the relevant copyright holder!. In this case, contact is probably made through the composer's/writer's agent!.

Could you perform it anyway you want!? Probably not!. It depends on the wishes of the copyright owner!. Most prefer their works to be performed with the least amount of reworking as possible, and as you can see below, you may not be able to create a musical anyway!.

Yes, there is already a musical on the Beatles: it's called 'Love' and is performed by Cirque du Soleil!.

No matter what you do, you're probably going to have to pay some form of royalties!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You'd probably have to have a lot of money to get the right to something as new as ACROSS THE UNIVERSE!. I would suggest calling or emailing or even snail mailing the company who made the movie after you have some stuff written!. Tell them you want to workshop a show!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
