Question: How do actors get into character!?
I ask this because I've heard the stories about some famous, talented actors out there being shy!.
Do some of them do drugs to deliver a good performance, to open up!?
Is there life stressful enough and that is why they can portray a character in misery, per se!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

hahahhahahah drugs!?! you are very funny! usually good actors come from troubled familes, so like you say it's easier for them to portay a character in misery- because they can put themselves in the character's shoes muc more readily than say an actor from a well off happy background!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That's what acting is all about! There are many actors that might be shy in real life, but completely open up onstage!
We enjoy doing it and get a rush from performing!. If you need drugs to do that, acting probably isn't for you!. There are many actors who do get stage fright as well, but really once you're out there, it's fun and enjoyable!.

Life being stressful has nothing to do with an actors ability to play miserable characters!. A good actor can tap into a wide range of emotions, whatever might be going on in their life!. Again, that is what acting is all about!. Being in the moment!. Connecting!. If you get a part where you're playing a character that is completely different from you in terms of life experiences (maybe they were a POW!?), physicality (disabled!?), even when they were alive ( civil war era!?), then that's when you have to do your research and find out what life would have been like during that time, how a disabled person would move, maybe interview real POW's, etc, but emotions themselves are universal!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Unfortunately there are a few actors that use drugs because they think it helps them get into character!. These are never the best actors!.

As far as getting into character, most successful actors find the similarities between themselves and the characters and build on those!. In dealing with pain and misery, actors usually find elements from their own lives or personalities that resonate with those of the characters!. The best actors usually find that playing the characters with miserable lives ends up helping them release similar negative elements from their own lives!.

Some actors unfortunately are not able to separate themselves from their characters and end up in greater misery due to giving themselves over to the character's misery!.

It takes very, very talented and sensitive directors and acting coaches to help this type of actor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The playwright has created the character so all the actor has to do is become the vessel to hold that character!. The vast majority of roles do not require the actor to do much if any change in his physical self!. I have known actors who used weed to relax and open up to a good performance, but I would never recommend anyone doing that!. An actor does not have to have a stressful life to play a character in misery!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no to get into character an actor will need to understand the character:how they react to others, how others react to them, what they believe, how they feel and express this and what they think and why they think it!.
after this the actor can role play a character realisticly without taking drugsWww@QuestionHome@Com

NO one ever gets into charter they devolve them as they go!. The director also has some input into the charter as well!. Take Jack sparrow Johnny Depp is just the kind of actor that knows how to protry(sp) the charterWww@QuestionHome@Com
