Question: Could the play Hamlet have ended another way, while retaining the same sense of poignancy!?

You may need to rephrase this question a bit!.

Do you want to know how else it could have ended!?
Or
If it didn't end the way it did would it still have its poignancy!?

I think that Hamlet has one of the most notorious endings in all of Shakespeare (outside of R&J, Midsummer, and maybe the Tempest)!. The history of its ending is actually somewhat interesting!.

Many of Shakespeare’s plays have been altered through the generations to meet the approval of the audiences, and to be more appealing to critics and the royalty of England!. At one time (I don't know the time period, maybe Victorian) the ending of hamlet was never done, the last scene was simply the monologue by Horatio, and in other generations the scene would be cut completely!.

So! It’s a matter of interpretation really, everyone is a critic, and everyone is going to cut the play to their own specifications!.

If you're looking for personal opinions, then!.!.!. I don't think that its fair to guess if an alternative ending would be better and more poignant!. With the way modern directing of Shakespeare is, you can do pretty much anything that you want to the text, alter the ending, change the main characters, add characters, cut out lines, !.!.!. and still the play can maintain its poignancy!.

This is from a theatrical stand point, from a literary stand point !.!.!. No!. I think that as a novella, the ending is exactly what the author intended and is a thought provoking one which has resonated over 400 years!.

No, great plays can't end a different way, that's why they're great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
