I believe they came from "Old Opera" which used to be called "Musica/Dramatica!. Most Opera was Tragedy until Rossini began writing what was called "Opera Buffa" or comedy Opera!. One of his first was "Cenerentola" Cinderella to us!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The word "comedy" is derived from the Classical Greek and originally meant a village revel (festivity)!.

The word "tragedy" - origin is also Greek meaning "goat song" This meaning may have referred to horse or goat costumes worn by actors who played the satyrs, or a goat being presented as a prize at a song contest and in both cases the reference would have been the respect for Dionysus!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
